About Me
I am a teacher who prides himself on fostering creativity in a learning environment. I achieve this as a High School English Teacher and Head of Department. I pride myself in teaching lessons that are engaging, imaginative and nurture a sense of self-discovery on the part of my students. I teach English because it attempts to illuminate and articulate the complexities of life and the position that humanity occupies within it. I teach because words are cathartic when it comes to love, hope, despair and dreams: they help us self-discover. In this way, I hope to inspire a thirst for knowledge by igniting the passions of the students in my care through the creativity of English.
I also have an enthusiasm for the outdoors which is emulated in the hikes and camps in which I am involved as well as the Kamoka Bush School. My additional specialties lie in Outdoor (Environmental) Education; as such I am Director of Outdoor Education at St Stithians Boys’ College and my philosophy of education is based on the self-awareness, leadership and the overall development of boys while at school, which has relevance in their later lives. The Rites of Passage and positive traditions of the Boys’ Schools are paramount in this regard, and the Leadership and Outdoor Programme which I oversee governs much of this. I feel that by removing students from the confides of a classroom, they are afforded an opportunity interact with a different landscape: a place that in enriched with enjoyment and opportunities to be custodians of our environment. Leadership, resilience and those other life lessons are created as a byproduct from the wonder which is enveloped in our wild spaces.
Outside of teaching, I am a family man, outdoorsman and a pilot. My enthusiasm for aviation runs deep, and as such I feel a sense of profound happiness when I am in the air. I am lucky to be in a position where I can take to the skies in our vintage biplane on a regular basis. My love for the bush and nature is something that is shared by my family, and I am in a constant space of fascination when it comes to the joy that my daughter derives from wildlife. We share holidays as a family which are entrenched in wonderful experiences and I am privileged to have a loving wife that is a rock to my ideas, an inspiration to my thoughts and an anchor to my heart.
